Basic requirements

If you have already used Tasker and IFTTT then this process will hardly take your 15 minutes. So the basic requirements are to have your own IFTTT account with Alexa and SMS or Android SMS channels working, Tasker and Wake on Lan Android apps to be downloaded on your Android smartphone.

Stage #1: Enable Wake on LAN

Now if you are ready with all the devices, apps and accounts enabled then we must start the first stage of the process. This process is called enabling Wake on Lan which will help your computer to bring out from a low power state like Hibernate or Sleep. So let us know this process for Windows, Mac and BIOS one by one.

For Windows PC

Step #1. Click on Start and type Device Manager and then press Return.

Step #2. You need to locate Network adaptors and then expand it by double-clicking on it.

Step #3. Double-click on the device name or you may even right-click on it to select Properties.

Step #4. Click on Power Management tab and check all boxes you see.

Step #5. Click on Advance tab.

Step #6. Click on Wait for Link and then select On from the drop-down menu.

For BIOS

Step #1. Shut down your computer first and boot into BIOS menu. (Del or F2 keys should work)

Step #2. Locate WoL settings which normally be found in the Power Management or Advanced Options sections.

Step #3. Enable the Power On by PCI-E/PCI under the Advanced Power Management.

Note: The labels of these features may vary.

Step #4. Once the features are enabled click on Save and the reboot.

Stage #2: Setting up IFTTT Recipe

Setting up and connecting with IFTTT Recipe is the crucial part of this entire process because you will be connecting with Amazon Alexa channel with either of the two SMS channels offered by IFTTT. So first you need to install IFTTT Android app which will enable Android SMS and also IFTTT SMS channel. In the second SMS channel, the IFTTT will send you text from a registered number. Remember, this channel has a limit of 100 SMS per month.

Stage #3: Setting up Tasker and Wake on LAN

To bridge Alexa with your PC you need to connect both Tasker and IFTTT through SMS because now your Android device and PC will be using Wake on LAN app.

Step #1. Set up your Android device with the same network which your PC is using.

Step #2. Open the Wake on Lan app.

Step #3. Select your computer from the listed network devices by clicking on the + sign at the bottom right corner of your app.

Step #4. Launch Tasker and swipe to the Tasks panel.

Step #5. Tap on the + sign at the bottom of your screen and give your Task a unique name.

Step #6. Tap on the + sign once more and then select Plugin.

Step #7. Now select Wake On Lan.

Step #8. You will see a Pen icon on the top right corner of your app or just right to Configuration.

Step #9. Select your PC from the listed device and tap on Back button.

Step #10. Swipe back till your find Profiles and tap on the + icon at the bottom of your screen, then select Event.

Step #11. Tap on Phone and select Received Text.

Step #12. Tap on the search icon you will see to the right of Sender.

  • If you want to use Android SMS channel then find and select your contact info.
  • If you are using IFTTT SMS channel then run the recipe by saying “Alexa trigger [name of trigger phrase]” and add the IFTTT number to your contact. Now search for it and select the IFTTT contact.

Step #14. Press the back navigation button to finish the process.

Step #15. Select PC On (or WoL) task from the drop-down menu.

Note: You need to have the Profile toggled to ON and back out of Tasker.

How to Turn On your Mac or Windows PC with Amazon Alexa

You need to note here that this will work only when your Mac or Windows PC is on Sleep or Hibernate state and it will not work if it is fully powered. Secondly, you must use the same Wi-Fi network for both your Android phone and Mac or Windows PC.

Now say, “Alexa, trigger PC on” and your phone will receive an SMS and Tasker will automatically tell the Wake on Lan app to wake up your Mac or Windows PC.

Normally it takes a small pause before the SMS is sent but it has been noticed that it actually takes between 3 to 10 seconds precisely.
