Make Sure About These Before We Start…

  • Is your software updated? – You got to update your software if your old Mac is still running on OS X 7 or earlier. So if you haven’t then do it now.
  • Name your old Mac – This will make the process easier, so if you still have not named your old Mac then follow this path Open System Preferences → Sharing → Enter the name of your likings in Computer Name field.
  • Connect both old and New Mac to a power source – When you are transferring your data from old Mac to the new one, both the machines should have enough power to run the process is on, so make sure that both of them are connected to a power source.
  • Get your connectors ready – You need to keep your FireWIre, Thunderbolt or Ethernet cable handy and ready before you start the transfer. If you don’t have the cable you can use the local Wi-Fi network as mentioned earlier.

Old Mac First

Step #1. Connect the FireWire, Thunderbolt or Ethernet cable between your old and the new Mac.

Note: If you want to use the local Wi-Fi then make sure that both the Macs are connected to the same.

Open Your New Mac

Step #1. Launch the Finder Window.

Step #2. Click on Applications in the sidebar.

Step #3. On Utilities folder Double Click.

Step #4. Double Click on Migration Assistant.

Step #5. Click on Continue.

Step #6. If prompted, enter your administrator password.

Step #7. Click on OK.

Step #8. Now click on “From a Mac…” when you are prompted to select the source of your transfer.

Step #9. Click on Continue.

Go Back To Old Mac

Step #1. Launch a Finder Window.

Step #2. On the sidebar click on Applications.

Step #3. On Utilities folder Double Click.

Step #4. Double Click on Migration Assistant.

Step #5. Click on Continue.

Step #6. If prompted enter your administrative password.

Step #7. Click on OK.

Step #8. When prompted click onto a new Mac…

Back to New Mac

Step #1. New Mac is searching for the source to transfer, so if you are using a Time Machine backup select your Time Machine hard drive or else simply select your old Mac.

Step #2. Click on Continue.

Head Back to Old Mac

Step #1. Confirm the code on your old Mac which is the same one on your new Mac.

Step #2. Click on Continue.

Back to New Mac

Step #1. Select all the files, settings, apps and all those info which you want to transfer to your new mac.

Step #2. Click on Continue.

Note: This will take some time so it’s time to watch your favorite videos while sipping some nice coffee.

Once You’re Done

Once the process is done you should see all the data in your new Mac which you have just transferred from your old Mac. Just check it and make sure it is like that only.

And yes, after you are used to with the new Mac and want to sell the older one then do not forget to wipe all the data before you hand it over to the new owner.
